We are delighted to announce that our fantastic young athletes middle distance coach, James McDonald, has been awarded a BEM in the King’s Honours.
Since 2003, James has developed squads of middle distance athletes that have competed with the very best in the UK. The inclusive environment that James has fostered, has been at the core of the success of the Club’s young athletes over the last two decades.
Brilliant individuals have been coached by James and gone on to achieve international honours, including (but not limited to) Katie Snowden, Jessie Knight, Saskia Millard and Lewis Lloyd, but his approach is very much one of nurturing and encouraging athletes of all abilities.
In recognition of his contribution to the Club, James was bestowed the most meritorious award by Herne Hill Harriers in 2016, when he was made a Life Member.
The submission for James for Honours was very much driven by parents of his athletes, which says everything about the regard in which James is held. As one of our group suggested, in reality it was a ‘tap in’ for us as James’ legacy is so rich. In the words of some who wrote in support:
Saskia Millard, athlete
James’ approach was distinctive in that he made every athlete, whether a beginner or competing at national level, feel valued and encouraged. At times, there were 40 or 50 athletes in our group, yet he somehow ensured that each individual received his attention and belief. His enthusiasm was infectious, his kindness unwavering, and his commitment tireless. Many of us credit him with sparking a lifelong love of athletics and sport.
Katie Snowden, athlete
Personally, whilst being by coached by James, I was able to achieve great success not only at club level, but also at international level earning my first British vest aged 16. One of my junior career highlights was winning Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011. I have since continued to be competitive in athletics for nearly 20 years, including becoming an Olympian in 2021, and this is entirely thanks to James helping me develop resilience, confidence, and a lifelong love for running.
Claire Millard, parent
I am writing as the mother of an athlete who was coached by James McDonald from a young age. I cannot overstate the difference he has made to my daughter’s life and to our family. His dedication, kindness, and expertise has shaped not only her sporting career but also the confident young woman she has become.
Michael O’Brien, parent
The atmosphere in the group was different, it was noisy and appeared chaotic but the children were laser focussed on the training session and all knew what they were doing. James was covered in stop watches and holding walkie talkies. Everyone knew their timing splits and personal bests. My daughters joined in and I asked who and how much I had to pay, James promptly told me that it was all free.
Parthi Srinivasan, Consultant Surgeon
Despite facing major challenges during his treatment, James has always shown exceptional resilience. He faced all his treatments courageously, with determination and always with good humour. James maintained a positive outlook and continued to live life to the full. Amazingly despite the exhausting treatment, James continued to do voluntary work, coaching, supporting and inspiring young adults in an athletic group.
Lorna Boothe, MBE, England Athletics
I have been a colleague coach of his for over 20 years and never have I seen such energy, commitment, passion and drive towards the development of young people. His commitment to the grass roots, youth and beyond is not only to achieve medals and trophies but encouraging self-belief, confidence, building foundations and learning lifelong lessons. He is an inspiration and role model to all that cross his path.
