A warm Monday evening gave Herne Hill Veterans teams a great workout and overall result to consolidate our place at the top of the divisional league. Even the late summer downpour and our average, yet earnest, 400m relay result could not dampen our overall team spirit and enthusiasm. Qualification for the September 7th final beckons but must be completed by performing to at least this standard at our final league match to be held in Perivale on 14th of July.
No fewer than 25 HHH athletes competed and supported magnificently for the team to reverse the previous match result and overcoming tenacious challenges by winning the match on 133 points to 126 and 116 for Hillingdon and Serpentine respectively.
Outstanding sights were a crowded 24 man 1500m with nine red and black hooped vests doggedly vying for every place leading to personal and season’s best for nearly every one of our athletes, magnificent! Gary Ironmonger continues his remarkable streak of 400m/1500m double PB’s and Keith Newton looking very close to his own exacting race fitness, which had been lost through a prolonged period of injury. Garry Power first checked the robustness of the throws cage before posting a legal discus throw at 41-74 metres with Nic Nicola and Dave Millard with great points and 34-62m and 31-44m javelin launches respectively.
Fine shows from first timers Paul Marriot (100m/HJ), Nic Nicola (Javelin), Lloyd Collier (400m/relay), Joshua Lindo (100m/400m) and Dan Hallam (1500m) as well as season’s first performers of David Millard (Javelin), Andy Lea-Gerrard (Javelin, Discus) and Andy Simms (1500m).
More of the same will see us to Ashford, well done to one and all. Every one of you played your part in this success. Long may it continue, or dare I demand improvement?
Up the Hill,
Waldy Pauzers
