Grassroots athletics event attracts world-class field as Olympians descend on South London

Herne Hill Harriers has announced a star-studded field for its British Milers Club (BMC) event at Tooting Bec Athletics Track on 26 July 2023. The Tooting BMC meeting follows the Diamond League meeting at the London Stadium on Sunday, which saw international athletes set world-leading times across a range of distances. Some of the Diamond League competitors will race in Tooting this Wednesday, including:

  • New Zealand Olympian Sam Tanner and Australia’s Adam Spencer, who both ran 3:31 in the men’s 1500m.
  • Great Britain’s Megan Keith, who will race in the 1500m. At the Diamond League event, the talented 21-year-old ran one of the fastest-ever British women’s 5000m times, a huge lifetime best of 14:56.98, ten days after winning the European under-23 5000m title.
  • Great Britain’s Guy Learmonth, Thomas Randolph, and Sam Reardon, who will run in the men’s 800m after impressive performances at the London Stadium.

Other entrants include a group of world-class athletes from Australia looking to run the World Championships standard in the women’s 800m, as well as three British Olympians: Alex Bell (800m), Revee Walcott-Nolan (800m), and Steph Twell (5000m).

In addition to carrying a UK Athletics Level 2 licence – which ensures performances can count for qualifying times for major championships – the Tooting BMC event will have one of the biggest-ever BMC prize pots of £8000, courtesy of sponsor MarketAxess. Spectators are encouraged to attend, free of charge.

Keith Newton, Meeting Organiser for Herne Hill Harriers, said: “High-quality athletics has long been a feature of Herne Hill Harriers and our track at Tooting. The mix of grassroots sports, community participation and the aspirational – both in terms of the elite athletes Herne Hill Harriers produces and those who attend our events – is the perfect reflection of what the club stands for. We are delighted that this year’s BMC event, its major championships qualifying status and the generous support of our sponsors has helped to attract a top-class field.”

Toby West, Global Head of Marketing at MarketAxess, said: “As a business, we are committed to partnerships that help to support communities. Tooting BMC is a prime example of this. We are delighted to sponsor the event and look forward to a top night of athletics in South London.” Full start lists and the timetable for Tooting BMC can be found here:
