Herne Hill Harriers U13/15 boys team started their retention of the Ebbisham League at Sutton Arena which they have won five out of the past six seasons by winning their first league match from local clubs Croydon Harriers and Sutton & District by thirty points in a cold and windy conditions. There were some excellent performances by youngsters making their debuts for the club including Sam Moody who won the U13 boys 800m, Anthony Ahatty who won the U15 boys 80m hurdles and Alex Graham who won the B string high jump with 1.50m.
Meanwhile HHH senior men’s road runners travelled to Sutton Park in Birmingham to compete against the top road running clubs in the country and finished a very creditable 25th in the National 12 stage road relays out of 62 complete teams. Good runs from Ben Paviour, Michael Dyer, Chris Busaileh, Keith Newton, John Kettle, Mike Cummings, Mohammed Ismail, Jonny Henderson, Simon Coombes, Deron Fagan, Matt Donnery and Basil Wallace flew the HHH flag on the national stage.
The club also held their first open meeting of the season at Tooting Bec track which attracted a large entry and several promient performances, there was a memorable 3000m race where the generations from the club were represented through U20 Sam Woods, U17 Lascelles Hussey and Vic Maughn who had just celebrated his fiftieth birthday the week before. The trio battled throughout the seven and three quarter lapped until Sam and Lascelles broke away on the final lap and battled down the home straight to record new PBs of 9.34.48 and 9.34.78 whilst Vic was rewarded with an excellent early season time of 9.38.56.
