KATIE SELECTED FOR THIRD COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Katie Snowden has been selected for her third Commonwealth Games; she will compete over the Mile for Team England in Glasgow in four weeks’ time. This extends Katie’s international career to more than 15 years, an incredible achievement for any track and field athlete.

Having joined the Club in 2006 aged 12, Katie’s talent was harnessed by James McDonald BEM. Under his coaching, Katie developed as a prolific talent, becoming English Schools 800m champion in 2009, a year in which she ran 56:15 and 2:07.1 for 400 and 800 respectively, and gained her first international selection for England, winning the SIAB 800 in 2:08.18.  

Such was her range, Katie combined top level cross country running with 400 pace, running 54:51 in 2011 aged just 17. This was a breakthrough year in which Katie won the Commonwealth Youth Games 800, and was 7th in the IAAF World Youth Games 800 in 2:05.64.

Katie progressed to European U23 Championships in 2015, finishing 6th in the 800 in 2:03.45, before making a major breakthrough into senior global championships. Her Commonwealth Games journey began in 2018 on Australia’s Gold Coast, followed by Birmingham in 2022, contesting the 1500 in both.

On the most significant stage, Katie produced a superb 4:02.77 heat in the Olympic Games 1500 in Tokyo 2021, qualifying for the semi final. Katie finished 4th in the European Athletics Championships 1500 in Munich in 2022, and competed at these Championships again in 2024. Katie progressed to an outstanding season in 2023. After winning the 1500 at the British Championships, Katie produced a brilliant 3:56.72 semi final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, and then finished 8th in the final.

To underline Katie’s range and versatility, she also contested the World Indoor Championships this year over 3000, finishing 8th in the final.
