Michella Obijiaku rewrites Herne Hill women’s hammer records in the USA

Miki USA
One of Herne Hill Harriers most promising young athletes, Michella Obijiaku headed off to the United States in July 2016 aged 18 on a 4 years scholarship to study at the illustrious University of South Alabama, with its links to Yale and a number of high profile alumni.
In 2016 Michella was ranked 3rd in the UK for under 20 women’s shot put before her departure across the pond and so far in 2017 she is 3rd ranked in the UK under 23 women’s list with her PB to date of 14.08m set in Hattiesburg, USA at the end of April.
This capped a string of very fine performances in her main event, but arguably her most startling progress since being based in the States has been in throwing the hammer, a new event for Michella in which she has proceeded to rewrite the Herne Hill Harriers senior women’s club record with a string of excellent PB throws of well in excess of 40m. These PBs have so far culminated in best distances of first 47.23m at the Hattiesburg meet on 28th April and then a further improvement of what was by now her own club record with a throw of 47.84m at the Sun Belt Championships at Arlington, Texas on 13th May.
We shall follow Michella’s progress in both events avidly and with the US Collegiate track and field season soon to reach completion we will hope to see her competing in some of the bigger meetings back in the UK later this summer as the club enjoys having another nationally ranked young athlete who continues to excel and compete among the top 10 senior athletes in her main event the shot and also move further forward in her hammer throwing.
