Herne Hill male middle distance on the map

Herne Hill Harriers’ male middle distance athletes put themselves further onto the map as we moved into June. Arlo Ludewick won two BMC 800m races, revising his Club Record in the first at the Trafford Gold Standard where he ran 1:46.49, and then produced a storming victory, probably his best yet, at the Loughborough Grand Prix in 1:46.50. These are the two quickest times ever by any HHH athlete and both within the space of five days. This is a great confidence booster for the UK Championships next weekend where he will contest the 1500m.

It was great to see our two best male senior distance athletes at Loughborough, with Sam Bramwell, due to contest the 5000 at the UK Championships, smashing the 8 minute barrier for the first time over 3000 with 7:59.35 for 5th place in the A race. Men’s Captain, Danny Shaw, also ran and continued his brilliant season, finishing 3rd in the 3000 B race with a five second PB of 8:20.20.

In a week when our young athletes’ middle distance coach, James McDonald, was awarded a richly deserved BEM in the King’s Honours, it was fitting to see two of his U18 athletes, Tommy Clerkin and James Clements-Nash, smash their PBs and put themselves in very strong contention for English Schools selection. Tommy ran 8:46.51 over 3000 at the Hercules Wimbledon meet on Wednesday, and James ran 4:30.49 over 1500 Steeplechase at Kent Schools.

There were PBs for Lewis Laylee and Morgan Roberts at Wimbledon too, who ran 8:24.61 and 8:26.68 respectively, and many more PBs which leaves us with an extremely strong 3000 ranking list for 2026, and we are still only in June!
