Herne Hill Harriers update – Aug 30-31

Herne Hill Harriers’ track and field season ended with a flourish as Adeyinka Adeniran and Oscar Millard notched club record performances.
Adeniran has now lowered Harriers’ 80m hurdles best in the U15B age group three times this season, with his latest mark – a clocking of 10.81 – in a dominant victory at the England Athletics U17 and U15 championships. Adeniran’s previous best was 11.30 and his breakthrough performance saw him leap to number one in the 2014 UK rankings in his age group, while also elevating him to third on the all-time list.
Meanwhile, racing at a Watford Harriers open meeting, Millard revised the club’s U13B record for the 1500m with a time of 4.35.70, which is the fourth fastest in his age category in the UK in 2014.
With the track and field season drawing to a close, Adeniran and Millard were not alone in achieving late-summer success. Notably, Oscar’s sister, Saskia, came eighth in the U15G 800m race at the English championships. Millard – another club record holder over 800m – clocked 2.18.50 having led at the bell. Daniel Kane, another finalist at Bedford was fifth in 11.73 in the U15B 100m race. Catriona McSorley finished sixth in her 80m hurdles heat, meaning she missed out on a berth in the final, despite running close to her personal best.

At the opposite end of the age spectrum, Clarence Allen became the European Masters M50 100m champion in Turkey. Middle distance specialists Michael Dyer and Mike Cummings also ended their seasons on a high, with 1.51.07 in the 800m and 3.56.76 in the 1500m respectively at the midweek British Milers meeting at Stretford. Racing four days later, Cummings was unable to capitalise on his fine form at the Hampshire Athletics Grand Prix where he finished third in the 1500m in 4.01.40.

In another family affair, Ed and Bec Barrow both finished in the top-10 rankings of this year’s Surrey Road League. Ed was ninth in the M40 category, with his best result coming in the Elmbridge 10k, and Bec was seventh in the W35 group, having been to the fore in the Sutton 10km. Sarah Allen was fifth in the W45 age category.
Herne Hill Harriers were also out in force at the Dulwich parkrun, with Ieva Lobaciute (20.29) and Suzanne Swaine finishing (20.37) first and second in the women’s race. Mike Boyle was the club’s leading male finisher, posting 17.02 in sixth position.
