Harriers Veterans March (run, jump & throw) to Another Divisional Victory.

Monday 20/06/2016 Mid-London Division Match 3 SVT&F, Battersea Park Millennium Arena.

The Monday morning downpours and England’s last Euro group game did not bode well for competition tonight but by 18:00hrs we had surprisingly serene conditions, sun and blue sky. England may have let us down somewhat but the men in red and black hoops did far from that.

The programme took off with the High Jump. Our flying RAF man, Dave Adam (launching into another discipline), Paul Marriott won his M50 tussle and Waldy Pauzers closed in to set a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Next door in the Javelin a welcome to this year’s eventing to Nic Nicola and Garth Francis, both in age group below their actual years established a pair of 2nd places leaving us placed a second by one match points to Hillingdon and Serpies three point behind.

An 100m squad, which resembled the night’s Hodgson England team changes, was not controversial but rather essential for the team missing several of our real sprinters. But marathon man Mohammed Ismail, Lloyd Collier (who completed a half Ironman triathlon 9 days earlier), coupled with real sprinters Paul Marriott and Allan Long to put any concerns to what little wind there was. Respectively, two firsts (both 13.4 seconds) and two seconds got the Hill over the hump of what was perceived to be our weaker events selections for the evening. Matchwise, an overall six point HHH lead was already established.

Those same endurance men took on the 400m, Mo in 2nd, Lloyd in 1st, supplemented by M50 Gary Ironmonger with another consistent 1st and sub-60 secs display of front running whilst Mike Mann stepped down distance for a solid 3rd spot in the M60’s to consolidate the team position.
The triple jump was well covered by Paul Marriott (new event) and Allan Long showing the M50’s how it’s done by an excellent 1st place over jumpers 20 years his junior!

The Harriers marched on with three 1st’s from three with Waldy Pauzers, Andy Millbamk and Bob Healey ably covering the M35, M50 and M60 two kilometre walk stretching that match lead to a full eighteen points.

The discus gave Garry Power an easy win in the M35 event and for his benefit he then trained in competition with the M50 implement. The ever consistent Des Austin took another M50 1st. Andy Lea-Gerrard took a solid third for the M60 category where there was also a welcome return to competition for Derek Prentice, now getting over injury.

Back on the tartan we had a mass 1500m race consisting of all 28 scoring and non-scoring athletes! Difficult to track scorers but Simon Coombes had to work for the lead with non-scorer future Highgate Harrier Mark Griffin stalking and taking Simon at the last. (Simon had set his season’s best on Saturday at the SAL.) Nevertheless, a great race from Simon and indeed also Simon Thompson, pb, (M35B), Keith Newton (M50) and Mike Mann (M60) who between them gave us another full sweep of 1sts for the match competition. Robin Sanderson, Jon Key and Dave Adam made up the super seven HHH men who toed the 1500m line, just what we wanted.

If the R’n’B Hoops weren’t now rocking in the stands, they certainly were during the men’s (and women’s) 4x400m relays. A great start by Mo Ismail gave HHH the lead after the first leg, volunteer, on his 4th event, Jon Key was taken by Hillingdon but retook the 2nd leg lead at the changeover in his now characteristic final-straight sprint handing over to Gary Ironmonger where, once again the lead changed twice for Lloyd Collier to close out for HHH, only being outdone by Hillingdon’s Andy Wood, the fastest 400m man there on the day.

A fine finish to our match and a comfortable team victory.

Not quite so straightforward or convincing for England that evening but it looks like both HHH and England are through to the next round. Both our teams’ fates will be confirmed by Wednesday 13th July where, at Perivale, HHH meet again in Match 4. Let’s hope England can progress as well as HHH men’s veterans.

Match Result:
HHH 166, Hillingdon 139, Serpentine 136, Thames Valley H 61, Metros 52, Highgate 40, British Airways 2
