Championship Best for Lewis at HHH Open Meeting

At a very busy Herne Hill Harriers 125th Anniversary Open Meeting at Tooting Bec a Harriers senior men’s club championship best performance was set by 20 year old Lewis Lloyd. Lewis briliantly front ran his 1500m race from the gun and recorded his fastest ever first 800m split (2.02) and his clocking of 3.55.33 just shaded inside the previous CBP of 3.55.4 and was a top effort in very hot weather with a big winning margin of 9 seconds.

In the women’s 1500m Hannah Edwards was within a second of also breaking the senior female CBP with her time of 4.39.33 . Hannah’s time was a revision of her old 2008 PB by 5 seconds and at the end of the afternoon she also added a 400m PB of 59.55 to her recent 800m breakthrough to round off her best track season for 6 years. Behind Hannah Nicola Richmond also clocked a fine lifetime PB of 5.06.62 as an over 40 veteran.

Under 20 athlete Lascelles Hussey hit a 1.58.10 800 PB in a race with a very crowded start line which led to a very fast opening 200m for all, but he held on very well in the final straight. in the next 800m race Steph Mitchell and Cathy Ansell went head to head, with Steph’s speed and event expertise prevailing with a fine final 200m seeing her to her second best time of 2.19.50, while Cathy hung on for a PB 2.20.95 at a distance which is hitherto unknown territory for her.

The 400m races were well contested at the end of a very long afternoon, with Nicholas Atwell winning the A race in 48.04 just ahead of club mate Peter Phillips who ran 48.19. In the women’s 200m Eva Joseph ran a good PB of 25.1 in a very fast race. Under 17 athlete Abel Tadesse ran a fine PB in the men’s 2000m steeplechase with 6.45.12, while in the high jump under 20 Tayo Andrews cleared the bar at 1.97m for second place and training partner Breagha Campbell, another under 17, was only one centimetre shy of her PB with her 1.62m clearance. In the long jump under 17 Phillip Thomas jumped a PB of 6.24m to back up his recent best triple jump performances. In the men’s javelin multi event exponent Thomas Ashby threw a season’s best distance of 51.00m.

The final Herne Hill Harriers Open Meeting of the season will take place at Tooting Bec athletics track on Saturday 23rd August.
