Newly promoted HHH women win opening National League match

Herne Hill Harriers womens team achieved our best ever result in the UK Womens League by winning our first ever match in Division Two at Portsmouth. Having travelled missing many regulars to win the match was an outstanding team performance in which every member of the team contributed valuable points to the cause.

We got off to a storming start to the track races winning four of the six opening events : Aisha Naibe Wey won the 400m hurdles in 62.6 followed by a win double in the 800m through Maddy Austin and Monique Davies and Jess Knight won the 400m in a new PB of 56.1, this gave us a narrow lead which we were able to maintain throughout the afternoon thanks to the consistency of the throwers and jumpers and everyones efforts to cover all the events. Other B string wins were from Aisha in the 100m hurdles and Hannah Edwards in the 1500m & we had second places from Jess Knight in the long jump with 5.18m, Shanice Harrison 12.5 in the 100m and Gabriella Roseje in the shot 11.50m.

Typical of the spirit in the team was Penelope Fixter and Freya Cooper who covered the 3000m to ensure we filled that event and then Penelope made her debut in the 2000m steeeplechase event. The afternoon came to a glorious conclusion with our 4 x 400m relay team of Monique, Aisha, Maddy and Jess running the second fastest time ever in the club’s history of 3.55.0.
