Jack Heywood Jnr (1932-2015) was born on 19 February 1932 in Rotherhithe, and joined Herne Hill Harriers on 10 April 1947. Sadly Jack passed away on 2 January 2015 and thus was aged 82. Jack was elected a life member in 2000 and a Club President in 1987-88.
When Jack was elected a life member he followed his father Jack and became the first
father and son to have been awarded Life Membership of Herne Hill Harriers.
Jack joined the club in 1947 and won Surrey County cross country titles as a
youth in 1950 and a junior in 1953 and was a prominent member of the clubs
South of Thames winning team in 1954 and Surrey County winning teams of 1956
& 1958.
In 1955 Jack won his first international vest in the 10000m for
Great Britian against France after finishing third in the AAA 6 miles
championships. In 1955 Jack beat the 15 mile world record and improved that
time with 77.25.5 two years later setting English Native, British National &
British Empire & Commonwealth records for 13 & 14 miles along the way.
As a veteran athlete he was part of the world record 4 x 1 mile relay team in
1978. Jack undertook many roles for the club : editing the clubs bulletin,
organising the clubs young athletes cross country leagues and Southwark 5
road race, vetereans secretary, committee member and distribution officer.
