Harriers win Southern Womens League Sutton Fixture

Our women’s team started their 2011 season with a win on a bright but windy day at Sutton Arena, with a headwind in the straight slowing down times.  We had a mixed team – strong in most field events, but without several regulars on the track – and held on to win by ten points after leading for most of the afternoon.

Our main source of points was our strong throwing performances with Briony Phillips, Gabriella Rosejee, Charlotte Kanini-Parsons, Sharon St Luce Boyce & Barbara McAnas contributing 30 points out of a maximum 32 in the throws, with double string wins in the shot and javelin. Team captain Briony won all her throws (either A or B strings) and competed in the triple jump as well for 19 points.  U17 Rebekah Williams threw a PB of 27.66m as a non scorer which would have won the B string.

We had mixed results in the jumps, where in the pole vault (held indoors because of the wind) Rosa Williams had an excellent 3.30m clearance, but Jenny Honeyball was injured in the warm up and no heighted. U17 Francesca Meade had an excellent 2.30m PB. In the long jump one of our athletes arrived late and missed the event. Rebecca Zelic won the triple jump with a new PB of 10.41m, with Briony Phillips second

On the track the strong wind added at least 0.5 of a second to times in most events. Our only A string winners on the track were Alexandra Shalmoll in the A strong 800m and Rebecca Zelic in the 100m hurdles, whilst Jade Fyffe contributed two valuable B string wins in both hurdles events & U17 Vanessa La Fon won the B string 100m. We were consistent and kept getting lots of second places to maintain our lead in the match.

We had several inexperienced U17s on the track who helped fill team places in the middle distance, with Billie Barbour, Izzy Boughton & Francesa Meade all having their first taste of Southern Womens league and picking up important points to keep us ahead of the pursuing clubs.

The day represented a solid start to the season with some promising performances boding well for the big matches later in the summer. Herne Hill lead Bedford & County by 11 points on 94.
