The Common Runner – Week 44, 2014

Herne Hill Harriers’ veteran athletes stamped their class on the national running scene as they won silver medals at the British Masters Athletic Federation cross country relays.

The team of Vic Maughn, Ed Barrow, Tom Conlon, Graham Moyse and Mike Boyle finished second in the M45-54 category behind Salford Harriers at Derby. The silver success came a week after a Herne Hill M50 squad won gold medals at the south of England cross country championships.

Herne Hill were always in second at Derby, however, with a dominant Salford outfit eventually triumphing by more than two-and-a-half minutes. In-form Tom Conlon was again the pick of the Harriers squad, running the fastest leg.

Closer to home, a Herne Hill mixed team finished third in the opening East Surrey League fixture at Lloyd Park, Croydon. Robin Sanderson was first counter in sixth, with Dan Hallam 11th, Mel Edwards 16th and Ieva Lobaciute 31st. Edwards and Lobaciute were also first and second female finishers respectively on the five-mile course. New Herne Hill recruit, Matt Munro, ran as a guest and finished 19th.
