Herne Hill’s cross country season was finally closed out by the club’s veteran section, with a small enterprising group mastering another British national, the BMAF XC championships held on 18th March 2017 at Wavertree Park, Liverpool.
A barely undulating green grass course belied the strength sapping conditions as all the terrain consisted of waterlogged mud from several days of rain at the Merseyside venue. None the less, in the very veteran 6km race our 2nd claimer Mike Mann and Steve Knight ploughed through the two laps against an outstanding evergreen Nick Rose who won the M65’s+ race by over 300 metres.
As the horizontal rain persisted, the considerably more competitive 8km M35 to M60 race was finally won by local Liverpool Harriers man, Richard Burney. Local men Thames Hare & Hounds won the M45 team event, including HHH track runners Simon Wurr and Andy Weir. Such being the quality of the depth of the field HHH second claimer Tony Macdowall registered 5th M35 place wearing his Red and Black Hooped vest. Further Red and Black Hoops adorned the course with President Valdis Pauzers and Nigel Goodwin helping to close out both the race and the HHH cross country season.
Further entertainment and frivolity took place in Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club. Fortunately, there was an unanimous vote to forbid photographs of the day’s highlights for fear of being caught ‘lifting’. Perhaps that included the dancing in the Cavern, too.
Thanks for a great effort and to display the Red and Black Hoops at yet another National Championship.
Waldy Pauzers,
President.
