Herne Hill Harriers’ athletes warmed up for the imminent cross-country season with a string of fine performances across London, with Chris Busaileh most notable with victory at Streatham Common.
Busaileh led the charge at the annual Herne Hill-organised event that sees runners complete four loops of the common, covering an approximate 6.2 miles. Mike Cummings finished third, while Robin Jones fine-tuned his preparation for next week’s Chester Marathon by crossing the line in fourth. The Herne Hill trio of Cathy Ansell, Mel Edwards and Ieva Lobaciute were first, second and third respectively in the women’s race. Jonathan Ratcliffe was first V45, with Jacob Alley winning the one-mile fun run.
Rebecca Barrow maintained the senior women’s squad’s high standards as she finished second at the Coombe Hill 5 at Kingston. In the men’s race, Joe Croft was second, Deron Fagan third, Mike Boyle fourth, Vic Maughn sixth and Ed Barrow eighth.
Across the Thames, Abdi Madar was 10th at the Middlesex 10k in Victoria Park, clocking 32 minutes, 52 seconds, in a competitive field. Training partner Mohammed Ismail was 19th in 34.03. Elsewhere, Kojo Kyereme was second at the Windsor Half Marathon in 74.21, while Jonny Muir was 21st in the undulating Ealing Half Marathon, finishing in 78.11.
Harriers will be represented at the national road relays on Saturday and Sunday, with the Surrey League cross country kicking off for men and women on October 11.
