Herne Hill Harriers boys team started their season with an excellent win in their first Ebbisham League match at the David Weir Athletics Centre Sutton as they looked to regain their League title after being pipped by Dorking & Reigate last summer after five successive League tittles.
Despite having a large percentage of boys having their first experience of competing at an athletics match Herne Hill put in a solid team performance scoring consistently on the track and in the field with everyone contributing towards the points with many PBs despite the chilly weather.
Jamel Powell, making his debut for the club, won the U15 boys 100m and 200m (12.1 / 25.3) and was second in the triple jump with 9.72m whilst in the distance events there were good performances from England Schools cross country international Mohamed Mohamud who improved his PB for 800m by nearly eight seconds in 2.09.8, Oscar Millard who won the 1500m in 4.40.9 & Mohammed Ali who set a new PB in the 1500m with 4.58.2.
In the field Alex Tischler, making his debut for the club, threw a PB of 35.35m with Matthew Rawson who missed last summer winning the B string with 29.60m.
Other strong field performances came from Adam Hawkins who threw 26.17m in the discus, high jumped 1.45m and was second in the 80m hurdles in 13.3.
In the U13 boys Thomas Hawkins won the high jump with a PB 1.35m as well as finishing second in the javelin with 21.33m in which Sebastian Cooke won the B string in 16.84m.
On the track Jacob & Benjamin Harrison were second in the A and B strings of the 1500m & Jacob Alley second in the 800m. In all twelve boys were competing at their first League Competition for the club.
Always disputing the lead in the match Herne Hill Harriers pulled clear of Kingston and Walton in the second half of the match showing a really strong team spirit which augers well for the summer.
