Young sprinters and multi event athletes from Herne Hill Harriers enjoyed a successful close to the domestic track and field season at the Surrey Combined Events and Track Relays Championships at Carshalton on the weekend of 14th and 15th September.
The relay highlights were two high quality 4 x 100m relay wins in the U13 and U15 girls age groups on Saturday which were then followed by a 4 x 300m team win with a club U17 women’s record on Sunday. Harriers also had the winners of the U13 and U15 girls multi events titles. The winning U17W 4 x 300m team comprised Lucy Wright, India Blakey, Lily-Rose Brown and Ella Rennie.
Both of the younger 4 x 100m relay teams produced highly ranked wins with both teams consolidating their places in the national rankings for 2024. The U15 girls team of Nahla Berry, Olivia Stockwell Green, Princess Okuma and Pyale Wifa raced to a fine win with 48.80, breaking the championship record. During this season they have broken the Herne Hill club record several times and are currently ranked ranked fourth in the country with several enjoying their first year in athletics.
Fifteen minutes later the U13 girls 4 x 100m team were also winners. Mya Scott was running her first race in the team having joined the club a few weeks ago and was accompanied by Sasha Nolan, Maliyah Boothe and Alissa Aryah-Jones. The quartet ran 52.40, the fastest time in the country by a club team and lead the national rankings for this year. The U13 girls also finished first in the 4 x 200m but were disqualified for an infringement.
In the Combined Events Championship U15G Jasmine Nkoso continued her excellent season by winning the Surrey County pentathlon title with a consistent performance in preparation for the upcoming English Schools championships. She set a PB of 5.32m in the long jump and was close to her best running 11.88 in the 75m hurdles. Her points tally of 3,345 was less than 100 points below her best score.
In the U13 girls Sasha Nolan won the Surrey County title in her first multi events competition having a great battle with club mate Maliyah Boothe who finished third. Boothe took an early lead after three events but a strong long jump of 4.84m moved Nolan into the lead before the final event, the 800m. Nolan held on well in her first ever 800m to win with a score of 2,260 points with Boothe battling on for third place. Kasia Aseido-Boafo was also third in the U17 women’s heptathlon championship which included PBs in the 80m hurdles high jump shot and long jump.
