Herne Hill Harriers’ mens team extended our lead at the top of the midweek Rosenheim League Eastern Division to a clear 5 points margin over local rivals Belgrave Harriers after 5 of the 6 divisional matches of the season. With the last remaining Eastern Division fixture to come at our home track at Tooting on 20th July only a collapse of monumental proportions could now see us fail to win the divisional title and our place is assured in the overall league Final at Kingsmeadow, where the best of the Eastern and Western divisions play off for the league shield.
In our 5th match we recorded our 4th win, with a 3rd place at match 3 at Wimbledon Park being the only blemish on our record to date. Individual stars were Thomas Ashby winning the discus and shot, under 20’s Sunny Adebanji at 400m, Lewis Lloyd 800m and Jordan Maurice at 3000m, while an even younger event winner was John Tayleur in the pole vault, who is still an under 17, so it is very encouraging to see our young athletes more than holding their own in senior men’s competition in these type of fixtures. Indeed the winning margins for both Sunny and Lewis in their races were especially emphatic. Our comfortable lead notwithstanding, we should expect a strong turnout in the red and black hooped vests for the Tooting meeting.
