HHH Girls Pipped at the Post

Herne Hill Harriers had a dramatic but successful weekend with athletes involved in cross country, road running & track & field events.

At the South of England x country relays at Wormwood Scrubs on Saturday the clubs under 13 girls just failed to win the clubs first ever title at these championships. Winners of the road relays two weeks before the girls looked in good position leading after leg one through Katy-Ann McDonald, Eloise O’Shaughnessy was overtaken on leg two but handed over to Saskia Millard on leg three with Saskia 50 metres behind the leader, Saskia closed the gap but lost ground after slipping in the woods which had several waterlogged areas after the heavy overnight rain. Saskia emerged from the woods with a narrow lead but the Bracknell athlete closing down on her, in a frantic rush for the line Saskia looked to hold a narrow lead as the athletes battled neck and neck but just as they crossed the line Saskia slipped and fell and the win was awarded to Bracknell with both teams having the same time. This was the best performance in these championships from a HHH team since our senior men also won silver medals in the first edition a couple of years ago. Saskia won the award for the fastest leg.

At the same championships HHH senior men’s team of Mike Cummings, Ben Paviour, Tim Elsey & Jonny Henderson were an excellent fifth and in the younger agegroups the under 15 boys were ninth, under 17 men 17th & under 13 boys 12th.

On Sunday there were wins in the Dulwich 10km road race for Mohammed Ismail in 34.08 as we won the team prizes through Mohammed, Johhny Muir in a PB of 36.12 & Patrick Ewe in 38.06 where Nicki Sturzaker was second in 39.41, in the Pulse 3km road race for Saskia & Oscar Millard and Paul Burgess and in the London Quad Kids Championships at Sutton Arena where the clubs under 11 teams won with Ore Adamson & Ruben Rea winning individual award for the top performers.
