20 year old HHH athlete Michael Wheeler set a new club men’s shot record of 15.77m at Rugby at an open meeting timed to celebrate 100 days to go to the start of the Olympic Games. Currently studying at Loughborough University, Michael showed his recovery from an operation which wrote off his 2010 season is going well, as he improved his own record by 12 cm in a low key competition. Such fine early season form bodes well for him this summer.
HHH women sent a small team to Exeter for our first Southern Women’s League fixture of the season and although there were very few athletes available to make the long trip those who competed ensured the club were represented with 7th placed team on the day. Event winners from the club were Rebecca Zelic in the A string triple jump and Briony Phillips in the A shot and Jade Phillips in the B shot. With a full team in our remaining fixtures our women will look to climb the league table.
Elsewhere on the roads, Jonathan Stead placed a fine 30th in the Hamburg Marathon in 2.29.19, but was disappointed to be a little outside his personal best, while Eric Dol placed 2nd in the Crawley 12 hour track race, covering 76 miles in the allotted time. His comments were brief, but telling: “Unbelievable day, disgusting weather” and he was the “only person to run every step” throughout the 12 hour period.
